TB League 1/6th scale Majestic Crusader 12-inch Female Action Figure – History be damned LOL

The Crusades were a series of religious wars sanctioned by the Latin Church in the medieval period. The most commonly known Crusades are the campaigns in the Eastern Mediterranean aimed at recovering the Holy Land from Islamic rule but the term “Crusades” is also applied to other church-sanctioned campaigns. These were fought for a variety of reasons including the suppression of paganism and heresy, the resolution of conflict among rival Roman Catholic groups, or for political and territorial advantage. At the time of the early Crusades the word did not exist, only becoming the leading descriptive term around 1760.

In the modern age, many liberties are taken. Because of political correctness and its sensitivity towards society, everyone has to thread carefully, watch their tongues and choose their words wisely for fear of offending any particular group of people. History has been tweaked and rewritten for the movies we watch because the films have to cater to every gender and race. For instance, the African Americans did not fight alongside their white American brothers in World War II but had their own Black units. However, in Captain America: The First Avenger (2011), Steve Rogers fights alongside both black and white American troops. Of course, it’s all fiction since there were no superheroes in WWII either. In the film U-571, the Americans are the ones who capture a German Enigma machine in the spring of 1942. In reality, the Enigma was broken at Bletchley Park on 1 June 1941. The British had gotten their hands on an Enigma one year earlier. Now, with some wild imagination, we can have females fighting the Crusades. With long flowing hair even! Hahaha Fantasy Females are certainly the rage at the moment.

TB League PL2017-108 1/6th scale Majestic Crusader Female Action Figure features: head sculpt, TBLeague female seamless body with metal armature, close-fitting one-piece suit, 7 x interchangeable hands, neck armor, shoulder armor, elbow armor, forearm armor, breast armor, abdomen armor, knee high boots, belt, helmet, cape, sword, shield, axe, flag post & flag. The base is not included in the product set.

Understanding Medical Conversations

Posted by Katherine Chou, Product Manager and Chung-Cheng Chiu, Software Engineer, Google Brain Team

Good documentation helps create good clinical care by communicating a doctor’s thinking, their concerns, and their plans to the rest of the team. Unfortunately, physicians routinely spend more time doing documentation than doing what they love most — caring for patients. Doctors often spend ~6 hours in an 11-hour workday in the Electronic Health Records (EHR) on documentation.1 Consequently, one study found that more than half of surveyed doctors report at least one symptom of burnout.2

In order to help offload note-taking, many doctors have started using medical scribes as a part of their workflow. These scribes listen to the patient-doctor conversations and create notes for the EHR. According to a recent study, introducing scribes not only improved physician satisfaction, but also medical chart quality and accuracy.3 But the number of doctor-patient conversations that need a scribe is far beyond the capacity of people who are available for medical scribing.

We wondered: could the voice recognition technologies already available in Google Assistant, Google Home, and Google Translate be used to document patient-doctor conversations and help doctors and scribes summarize notes more quickly?

In “Speech Recognition for Medical Conversations”, we show that it is possible to build Automatic Speech Recognition (ASR) models for transcribing medical conversations. While most of the current ASR solutions in medical domain focus on transcribing doctor dictations (i.e., single speaker speech consisting of predictable medical terminology), our research shows that it is possible to build an ASR model which can handle multiple speaker conversations covering everything from weather to complex medical diagnosis.

Using this technology, we will start working with physicians and researchers at Stanford University, who have done extensive research on how scribes can improve physician satisfaction, to understand how deep learning techniques such as ASR can facilitate the scribing process of physician notes. In our pilot study, we investigate what types of clinically relevant information can be extracted from medical conversations to assist physicians in reducing their interactions with the EHR. The study is fully patient-consented and the content of the recording will be de-identified to protect patient privacy.

We hope these technologies will not only help return joy to practice by facilitating doctors and scribes with their everyday workload, but also help the patients get more dedicated and thorough medical attention, ideally, leading to better care.

Thankful

Ok in keeping with my all time favorite holiday, (Thanksgiving in the US) I am taking a different spin on this week’s blog…  I am going with things in this industry I am thankful for…

–  I am thankful that we have so many amazing people in this industry who care… do you know how hard it is to find people who really truly care these days?  And yet in our industry the selflessness by so many people and organizations is pretty awesome.

–  I am thankful for the potential upcoming merger of GANA and the NGA.  Such a huge and important move for the health, welfare, and future of our industry.  And kudos to Nicole Harris for being a visionary in pushing for this.

–  I am thankful that Glass Magazine picks up my blog weekly.  I think I have given Katy Devlin and Bethany Stough fits with having to worry that my weakening writing skills will devalue their amazing site and also whom I may end up offending along the way.  But they still support me.  Amazing.

–  I am thankful to all of those folks (way too many to mention) who helped me along the way in our glass universe; like my brother Steve who convinced me to leave television to join the business, then convinced me to turn down a great gig hosting a TV show in Virginia to stay at it.   And my late dad, who never pressured me about joining the business or even staying in it, he would’ve supported me the same incredible way if I was doing the fishing report in North Dakota or working in the glass industry.  Class guy who didn’t talk much but his lessons, even 16 years after he is gone still speaks volumes for me.

–  I am thankful that the forecasts for the industry look positive for the next few years.  Obviously a lot can change and change quickly, but I am surely enjoying the positive wave now.

–  I am thankful we have companies that are innovating even though some from outside the industry don’t believe it.  Our materials have come a long way since I started in 1991 even though some days it doesn’t feel that way.

–  I am thankful for all I have been fortunate enough to experience in person in our industry, including amazing float plants, great fab operations, unitized glazing setups, installations, testing, R&D, trade shows etc.  So many experiences and memories I cherish and will always be on the lookout for more.

–  I am thankful for my fellow bloggers who write blogs I only wish I could write.  People like John Wheaton who bring up really insightful subjects and get people thinking and acting in a way that can only help our industry.

–  I am thankful for GlassBuild America and for GANA BEC- two events that mean the world to me and our industry, and all I have learned at both.

–  Last… I am thankful that I still have the opportunity to write this blog every week and that at least a few people and my mom still read it.   I truly appreciate it and I am legitimately blown away every time someone notes they read it.  I’ve been posting for 12 years and I hope I still bring some interesting items up even though I am a ton mellower than I was when I started. (Thank goodness!)  I sincerely hope that every one out there in the U.S. has a wonderful holiday and to my friends in Canada and elsewhere enjoy the peace and quiet that should be emanating out of the United States Thursday!

LINKS of the WEEK

This sounds like a heck of a sight!
A yacht with 186 MILLION dollars worth of cocaine…. Wow.
VIDEO of the WEEK

Next June the new Deadpool movie comes out… I am torn on this one… I know some people loved it (my son especially) and others did not.  It is surely different.
